    WELCOME TO WESTAST

    WESTAST brings Biel/Bienne to life!

Since August 2025, WESTAST in Biel/Bienne has brought billiards together with a renovated sports bar. Forty years of billiards experience, club life and a dedicated team shape our venue.

Eight pool tables, two snooker tables and four modern dart lanes with automatic scoring sit alongside cosy bistro seating, snacks, drinks and live sport.

The name WESTAST has a long history in Biel/Bienne. Discover the planned A5 bypass and the story of our venue.

    OUR STORY

BIEL / BIENNE · TWO STORIES

    Why WESTAST?

WESTAST is a name with history in Biel/Bienne. For decades it referred to the planned western section of the A5 bypass. Today our billiards venue also bears the name.

    BIEL/BIENNE CITY HISTORY

The history of the A5 western bypass

The planned western section was meant to connect the existing A5 stretches around Biel/Bienne and divert traffic away from the city. The plans affected more than tunnels and junctions: neighbourhoods, streets and the future of western Biel/Bienne were at stake. Planning, debate and negotiation continued for decades.

    1. The idea of a bypass

Planning for a motorway bypass around Biel/Bienne began in the late 1950s. Several options were considered and later dropped. The western section was meant to close the gap in the A5 network.

    2. A defined project

The Federal Council approved the general projects for the western bypass, including the western section, Port tunnel and Vingelz bypass. One planned link ran from Brüggmoos to Biel West near Seevorstadt.

    3. Eastern section opens, western section contested

The eastern A5 section opened and approval of the western section began. The proposed works drew many objections. The «Westast so nicht!» committee and other groups organised demonstrations and called for alternatives; supporters continued to seek relief from road traffic.

    4. Dialogue begins

The authorities formed a dialogue group of supporters and opponents. Approval of the detailed project was suspended during the talks. The aim was a more broadly supported answer to the region’s traffic problems.

    5. The detailed project ends

On 7 December 2020 the dialogue group presented its recommendations. The authorities decided not to pursue the specific project. At the canton’s request, the federal government closed the detailed project in early 2021. Espace Biel/Bienne.Nidau was created to coordinate what came next.

    6. New approaches for western Biel/Bienne

The joint project body concluded its work with eleven recommendations. Public transport, walking and cycling, traffic management and better streets now take priority. The Bernstrasse–Aarbergstrasse–Ländtestrasse corridor, where our venue is located, is part of this work.

Current position: The former A5 western bypass will not be built. Closing the national road network gap remains a long-term strategic question; the latest recommendations say detailed planning should start no earlier than 2040.

    OUR WESTAST

38 years of billiards culture with Werner Hurni

Before Pool-Inn became WESTAST, Werner Hurni shaped the venue for 38 years. His passion for billiards and club life is the foundation of today's meeting place.

    01 / ROOTS

    Pool-Inn: billiards for all ages

Werner Hurni successfully ran the former Pool-Inn / Billard Center Biel at Aarbergstrasse 87 for 38 years. Billiards and meaningful leisure for people of all ages were always his priority. The venue was a place to play, learn and meet.

The Pool & Snooker Club Biel (PSC Biel), which still plays here today, is closely connected to the venue. Other clubs and players from Biel/Bienne, the Seeland and as far as the Solothurn region are also part of this billiards story. Werner shared his knowledge and supported the sport for decades.

At the 2025 Bieler Cup, PSC Biel honoured Werner Hurni for his many years of dedication. The handover to Pascal Nydegger in August 2025 began the venue's next chapter.

A new meeting place since 2025

Under Pascal Nydegger’s leadership, WESTAST opened in August 2025 after a change of management and extensive renovation as a Billiards & Sportsbar. The venue at Aarbergstrasse 87 was redesigned with a bar, bistro seating and a raised platform for gathering.

The result is a place where focused play and a relaxed evening fit together: come for billiards and stay at the bar. Drop in for a drink and you may find a new game.

    Games, people and club life

Eight pool tables, two snooker tables and four modern dart lanes with automatic scoring offer different ways to play. There is also live sport, food and drink, and billiards and darts equipment on site.

WESTAST’s sporting spirit appeared early: a Swiss Snooker Cup event took place here in October 2025. Today, club nights, tournaments and spontaneous games sit alongside birthdays and company events.

    PHOTO STORY · 2025

How the new WESTAST took shape

Around the familiar billiards tables, people sawed, painted, laid flooring and fitted out rooms. The bar, raised seating area, darts space and kitchen took shape step by step.

A familiar place begins to change

The room and tables of the former Pool-Inn were the starting point. Areas were cleared and tables protected to make space for the work.

The bar, darts and kitchen take shape

Work on the bar went on alongside the darts area. In the kitchen, surfaces were prepared and equipment installed.
